Overview

Complete your grand African safari by experiencing one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on Earth — trekking to see the endangered mountain gorillas of east-central Africa. These rare primates live in two main habitats: the Virunga Volcanoes, which span Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda.

Why Choose Rwanda or Uganda?

Rwanda

  • Best for: Comfort seekers and luxury travelers

  • Highlights: Easy access from Kigali, less strenuous treks, premium lodges

  • Main trekking area: Volcanoes National Park

Uganda

  • Best for: Adventurers and nature enthusiasts

  • Highlights: More rugged terrain, characterful lodges, rich biodiversity

  • Main trekking areas: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

What to Expect on Your Gorilla Trek

Whether in Uganda or Rwanda, the experience follows a similar pattern:

  1. Early Morning Transfer:
Your lodge will transfer you to the National Park headquarters. Permits are pre-arranged by your Janja Adventures planner.

  2. Group Assembly & Assignment:
Visitors are divided into groups of up to 10 based on fitness levels and matched with a gorilla family.

  3. Tracking the Gorillas:
Rangers track where each gorilla group nested the previous night. Depending on their location, you may drive to a closer trailhead or start at the park base.

  4. Hire a Porter (Recommended – ~$20):
Porters help carry bags (with water, snacks, etc.) and provide employment to local communities.

  5. Trekking Experience:
Once your group locates the gorillas, you are allowed to spend up to one hour in their presence — a profoundly moving and unforgettable encounter.

How to Get There

  • From Nairobi, Kenya:
Daily flights operate to both Kigali, Rwanda (~1.5 hours) and Entebbe, Uganda.

  • From Entebbe, Uganda:
Domestic flights connect to Kisoro and Kihihi, near Bwindi. Alternatively, take a scenic road trip through Uganda’s diverse landscapes.

Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

  • Global Significance: Home to nearly half of the world’s mountain gorilla population

  • Experience: Trekking through ancient rainforest full of birdlife (300+ species), unique flora, and rare animals like the forest elephant

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its ecological importance and breathtaking terrain

Local Saying: “If you plant your walking stick in the ground, it will take root overnight.”

Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park

  • Proximity: Just 3 hours from Kigali

  • Gorilla Groups: 12 habituated families available for trekking

  • More Than Gorillas: Spot golden monkeys, buffalo, hyenas, and over 170 bird species

  • Cultural Significance: Home of Dian Fossey’s famed Karisoke Research Center

Volcanoes National Park offers a seamless, high-comfort experience ideal for those wanting quick access and luxurious accommodation options.
