5 DAYS BURGURET – CHOGORIA TRAVERSE

The Burguret Route approaches Mt. Kenya from the quieter western side via Nanyuki. Starting above the Gathiuru Forest Station, this scenic and less-traveled trail takes you through rich forests, open moorlands, and high alpine zones. It offers incredible views, natural acclimatization ("climb high, sleep low"), and a spectacular summit experience via Point Lenana.

Tour Plan
Day 1: Nairobi – Giant Bamboo Camp (2,600m) | 10km | 4hrs
Day 2: Giant Bamboo – Highlands Castle (3,700m) | 8km | 5-6hrs
Hike through podocarpus and cedar forest into the heather zone. Lunch at the edge of the moorlands before ascending through giant lobelias to camp near the lava cliffs of Highlands Castle.
Day 3: Highlands Castle – Shipton’s Camp (4,235m) | 10km | ~6hrs
Cross high alpine terrain via Hausberg Col (4,600m), passing tarns, volcanic peaks, and glaciers before descending into Shipton’s Camp.
Day 4: Point Lenana (4,985m) – Lake Ellis Camp (3,300m) | ~10hrs
Pre-dawn summit of Point Lenana for sunrise. Descend via Hall Tarns through dramatic Gorges Valley landscapes to Lake Ellis Camp.
Day 5: Lake Ellis – Chogoria Gate (3,000m) | Few hrs
Short hike through moorlands and giant heathers to the gate. 4x4 transfer to Chogoria town and return transport to Nairobi.
